Continental shift pattern: 2 mornings, 2 afternoons, 2 nights, 2 off

Four teams, three 8-hour shifts a day, a cycle of 8 days: two mornings, two afternoons, two nights, two days off. Each team works six days in a row and rotates forward through the day, which is the direction sleep research favours. 42 hours a week on average. 6 shifts per 8-day cycle, 48 hours, an average of 42 hours a week. Longest stretch worked: 6 days. Longest break: 2 days. Weekend days are shown in blue.

How the Continental shift pattern works

  1. Team A: Monday and Tuesday mornings (6am to 2pm), Wednesday and Thursday afternoons (2pm to 10pm), Friday and Saturday nights (10pm to 6am), Sunday and Monday off. Then it starts again on Tuesday.
  2. Teams B, C and D start the same sequence 2, 4 and 6 days later, so every day has one team on each shift and one team off.
  3. The 8-day cycle drifts against the 7-day week: the two days off land on a different pair of weekdays each cycle and the pattern repeats every 8 weeks.
  4. Because the rotation is forward (morning, then afternoon, then night), every change of shift gives 24 hours between the end of one and the start of the next.

What it does well

  • 8-hour shifts, so no 12-hour days; usual where 12-hour shifts are ruled out by the work or by agreement.
  • Forward rotation, which most people adapt to better than backward rotation.
  • Only two nights in a row.
  • Four teams and no relief team for 24/7 cover.

Where it hurts

  • Six working days in a row, then only two off. Recovery is short.
  • The shift changes every two days, so the body never settles on one rhythm.
  • Days off drift through the week; weekends off are irregular.
  • Six days a week at 8 hours makes 48-hour weeks common, with 40-hour weeks in between.

Overtime in the United States

Less common in the United States than the 12-hour patterns. Where it is used, FLSA overtime applies to any 7-day workweek over 40 hours: a week with six 8-hour shifts is 48 hours, 8 of them overtime. Daily overtime states are not triggered by 8-hour shifts. Numbers for your rates: the overtime calculator; state break rules: break laws by state.

Working Time Regulations in the UK

This is a British and European term (the Working Time Directive, implemented in the UK by the Working Time Regulations 1998, is the framework it is usually checked against). The 42-hour average is under the 48-hour limit. Each shift change gives 24 hours of rest, above the 11 required. The two days off give 48 hours, meeting the weekly rest. Each 8-hour shift is over 6 hours and needs a 20-minute break. Night workers (the two nights each cycle count) are entitled to a health assessment, and their hours average under 8 in 24. The full list of limits: the Working Time Regulations and your rota; leave in hours: the holiday entitlement calculator.

Variants

  • 3-3-3-3: three of each shift and three off, a 12-day cycle, for teams that prefer fewer changes.
  • 2-2-3 on 8-hour shifts: mornings, afternoons and nights in blocks of 2, 2 and 3 over a 28-day cycle with three days off at the end.
  • 4 on 4 off with 12-hour shifts, where the works agreement allows 12-hour days.

Who uses it

Manufacturing, food production, printing, steel and glass, and other continuous processes in the UK and continental Europe.

Other patterns

Frequently asked questions

What is a Continental shift pattern?
A rotation for 24/7 operations on 8-hour shifts: four teams, each working 2 mornings, 2 afternoons, 2 nights and 2 days off in an 8-day cycle. One team is on each shift every day and one team is off.
How many hours a week is the Continental shift pattern?
48 hours per 8-day cycle (six 8-hour shifts), an average of 42 a week. Individual weeks vary between 40 and 48 hours because the cycle is 8 days, not 7.
Is the Continental shift pattern compliant with the Working Time Regulations?
Yes on the standard numbers: 42-hour average under the 48 limit, 24 hours between shifts against the 11 required, 48 hours off at the end of each cycle for weekly rest. Breaks of 20 minutes on each shift and night worker health assessments still have to be provided.
Why rotate forward?
Moving from mornings to afternoons to nights lengthens each day for the body, which adapts to a later bedtime more easily than to an earlier one. Backward rotation (nights, then afternoons, then mornings) shortens the day and is associated with more fatigue.
Continental or 4 on 4 off?
Same average hours. Continental keeps 8-hour shifts and rotates every two days with six days on; 4 on 4 off uses 12-hour shifts with four days on and four off. Pick by shift length first: if 12-hour days are acceptable, 4 on 4 off gives longer breaks; if not, Continental is the usual choice.

Put names on the pattern

The template gives you the teams. The planner gives each person their own shifts on their phone, with breaks and rest checked, and shift change requests that go through the manager instead of a group chat. Free up to 10 people.
